Airport novel(s) represent a literary genre that is not so much defined by its plot or cast of stock characters, as much as it is by the social function it serves. An airport novel is typically a fairly long but fast-paced novel of intrigue or adventure that is stereotypically found in the reading fare offered by airport newsstands for travelers to read in the rounds of sitting and waiting that constitute air travel.

I have been thinking a lot about your comment of the death tolls for the Techno-Thriller genre which just has not been sitting right with me. I have been reading from this genre ever since I venture out of the child’s section of library(~7th grade). This genre has been a fall back for me because the novels were given to be alright or better: I have really only hated 2 books in the genre.
You were right about the field losing two of the key figures, Tom Clancy and Michael Crichton; you did miss the other big ghost writer of the field, Robert Ludlum. His Covert-One series has a loose group of scientist playing watch dog to world. Now, Ludlum died in 2002 and this series published a sequel last year.
Along side Clancy, Clive Cussler has been building his fictional world longer (well publishing wise) than Clancy (You might not like his stuff: he has a couple ideas he kicks around for the entire novel and he is series oriented). His team of scientist (also trained by CIA or SEALs) go around the world fighting to maintain the ecosystem and teaching about the sea. His NUMA books generally have a single advancement in technology (he gets a little hand wave-y for the true science) that the team debates about the moral and ethical dilemmas faced with that can of worms. He as Clancy and Ludlum did, has taken young authors to write with him. He is overlooked a lot because his venture into the big screen was an utter flop: Sahara was a great book but it just could not transfer well with the direction taken.
Now those are the two old guys, What about new blood? Well, this genre is not grow nearly as quickly as YA science fiction or urban fantasy, space opera or fantastical worlds, which might be a good thing. The low number of publications means an improvement in the quality. After Dan Brown decide to pull tropes back from 30 years ago, the genre needed people to move back into the new era. The people who have ghost written for Clancy and Ludlum are doing a decent job at it (I would suggest, not so much to you, Clancy’s Net Force: a cyber policing series); however, new author have been cutting their teeth on this genre in the last decade. James Rollins has a group of DERPA sub-department Sigma Force; Jeremy Robinson has a team of US military people nickname Chessmen lead by the mysterious Deep Blue; Matthew Reilly has a team made of “minor UN countries” that investigate misuse of United States and European Union powers(Once again, all series driven). The mentioned authors takes current relations and try explore the delicate balance that the world powers have set up; while science fiction authors can do set up any kind of power balance in a fictional setting, to describe or even imagine the inner workings forces the author to walk a thin line.
This genre is not dying; it is just not exploding as the other genres which is helping the genre in turn. With the strong foundation laid and supporting authors to build up on their material, the genre is progressing at a conservative pace. I urge you not to mistake this a death knell.
