Robert J. Sawyer talks Big Ideas

TV Ontario, the channel that brought us Prisoners Of Gravity is now podcasting the audio track from its terrific lecture show Big Ideas. The most recent broadcast and podcast features SF author Robert J. Sawyer expounding on the virtues of Science Fiction (and the original Star Trek) and the vices of Star Wars. Have a listen |MP3| to his 40 minute lecture and be blown away! RJS’ analysis is solid, and his delivery is absolutely Shatnerian. Also under the microscope are the film of Planet Of The Apes and novelist Michael Crichton. Here’s the official description:

“Author Robert J. Sawyer explains how Hollywood’s approach to science fiction, starting with George Lucas’s Star Wars, has dulled the edge that made science fiction such a pertinent film genre. Sebastian Prooth and Andy Tyrer, executive producers of Star Trek: The Continuing Mission, join us to talk about this exciting new audio drama that revolves around the Trek Universe first created by the late Gene Roddenberry. “The Continuing Mission” focuses on the Starfleet crew aboard the Federation vessel, the USS Montana and its captain and crew.

Read-Along Adventures features COOL downloadable read-along books

Joey Chivers’ read along site ReadAlongAdventures.com is another in the recent spate of Record/Book combination sites we’ve been telling you about. Here’s how Joey describes ~~his~~ her mission:

“Remember those great read-along books and tapes from when you were a kid? We sure do. In the days before computers and DVD and VHS, this was the next best thing to watching a movie or a TV show. You put in the tape, open the book, and read along with the cheesy voice over and cool sound effects. And there was no way you could possibly forget when it was time to turn the page.”

More than two dozen adventures have been converted from paper and cassette books into flash animated e-books with accompanying audio. The craftsman-like translation from hard-copy to electronic version has produced an effect very much like the original books. If you’re feeling nostalgic, or have young kids yourself you should definitely download a few. Available on the site are:

Star Wars, Star Trek, James Bond, Mary Poppins, Indiana Jones and many others. Check them all out HERE.

Joey has also assigned ~~himself~~ herself the task of cataloging an ongoing list of all the Read-Along books that have ever been published. If you have some Read Along records or tapes that you think probably aren’t yet listed head on over and look.

Power Records Plaza is a blog with affectionate memories of an obscure 1970s and 1980s record company called, you guessed it… “Power Records.” The site is run by Shawn, a Canadian with nostalgia for the story LPs he and his brother grew up listening to. On PRP blog you’ll find images and sound files that will please any Power Records fan.
