Entitled Opinions is a radio program (and podcast) from Stanford university’s radio station KZSU. In discussion from a program in May 2009 are the editors of
The Re-Enchantment of the World: Secular Magic in a Rational Age: Joshua Landy (a professor of French at Stanford) and Michael Saler (professor of history at the UC Davis). Together they are responding to Max Weber’s famous statement:
“The fate of our times is characterized by rationalization and intellectualization, and, above all, by the ‘disenchantment of the world.’ —Max Weber
This concept, disenchantment (entzauberung), was introduced by Weber to describe the character of his modernized, and increasingly secularized society, where scientific understanding had become more highly valued than religious belief. In their discussion Saler and Landy ask questions like:
‘Do all philosophical inquiries begin in wonder?’
‘Why does Science Fiction take off as a genre?’
‘Can we replace God and the Devil with Sherlock Holmes’ rationality and Moriarty’s criminality?’
‘Is the hierarchy of Middle Earth something we’d like to see in our world?’
It’s a fascinating discussion! |MP3|

I’ve updated our LEIGH BRACKETT page to include a few new finds – including this cool 1975 interview…
A 1975 Interview With Leigh Brackett

“My interview with author Leigh Brackett took place in Kinsman, Ohio. I drove with my young daughter on a hot, humid, blazing July 1975 day to Leigh’s rural farm house. She was a gracious hostess and introduced us to her husband, fellow science fiction author Edward [sic] Hamilton. A lot of heady imagination was born in that rural locale. I vividly remember Leigh’s making us lemonade to help cool us — it was pure sugar. My teeth still cringe when I think of it. On the way home we stopped in the woods by a lake and took a refreshing dip in the warm water. The whole trip was like a trip to an alien world, where we were welcomed by a fairy godmother.”

Here’s a short 2007 interview with Professor Eric Rabkin. It was broadcast on the Eight Forty-Eight program on Chicago Public Radio (WBEZ). In it Rabkin talks about the typically less than predictive relationship between Science and Science Fiction. |MP3|

Tor.com’s The Geek’s Guide to the Galaxy Podcast has an fun interview with Steve Eley—editor of Escape Pod. After the interview wraps the hosts, John Joseph Adams and David Barr Kirtley, talk about audiobooks in a form not at all unlike SFFaudio’s own long running SFFaudio Podcast. Luckily for Messrs. Adams and Kirtley they give right and proper props to SFFaudio.com – and thus avoid a sternly worded email from SFFaudio’s crack legal department (crack as in “excelling in skill or achievement” rather than on crack).

Amy Kinard, of Open Books Open Mind cable show (airing in Southern Oregon and online at RogueTV.org) interviews Craig Black, founder of Blackstone Audio, at their $5 Warehouse Sale to benefit Jackson County Public Libraries on July 25, 2009 in Ashland, Oregon.
This is a short but informative interview. I find it fascinating, and logical, that the Oregon Shakespeare Festival (held in Ashland) is what made Blackstone’s founders choose to place its business in what looks like little more than a husky village. It looks like Ashland can really punch above its weight!
