Comic News Insider: interview with Garth Ennis

The folks at Comic News Insider podcast have the one and only podcast interview with Garth Ennis on the internet (as far as I could find). This is a shame. I can find more information about more contemporary authors online than I could ever want. The exception is Garth Ennis.

For my money there’s nowhere near enough Garth Ennis info on the internet. Ideally what I’d like is an official author’s blog, telling me which new Garth Ennis comics are out now in trade paperback. I loves me my Ennis.

Charles Ardai interview about Hard Case Crime

Hard Case Crime Speaking of Ardai and new book lines, here’s an older interview from NPR member station WHYY. Terry Gross interviewed Charles Ardai for her show Fresh Air back on May 5, 2008. In the interview Ardai details his inspirations (including his stories from the holocaust, William Blake and Lawrence Block) for his novel Songs Of Innocence, and the rest of the Hard Case Crime series. Near the end of the interview Ardai discusses the then upcoming 50th book in the HCC series (called Fifty-To-One) – which is a recursive novel about an editor named “Charles” who starts a paperback book line called “Hard Case Crime” – it takes the titles of the first 50 books in the HCC series and uses them as chapter titles to inform the novel’s plot. So cool!

Charles Ardai interview about Gabriel Hunt

The Greensboro, NC newspaper News & Record has a series of short audio clips from an interview with Charles Ardai, he’s the creator of the Hard Case Crime series. In these clips he talks about the inspiration for this new book series Gabriel Hunt.

By the way, four of the books are out right now with more to come over the months ahead. And there’s still no word on any audiobook versions. That’s gotta change.

Hour 25 interview with Jack Vance (from 1976)

This 1976 interview was recorded for HOUR 25, a long running Science Fiction radio show broadcast out of KPFK, a Los Angeles radio station. I couldn’t find an MP3 version online, but someone has done up a multi-segmented youtube version. One of the issues discussed is author remuneration. Vance speaks frankly about how even though he is ‘quite an established writer’ in the field of Science Fiction and Mystery, he doesn’t have enough income from either genre. Other reports, also mentioned in the interview, point out that those SF authors (like Isaac Asimov and Lin Carter) who have made a decent living via their writing, made most of that money writing non-fiction articles or selling the movie rights to their fiction. Perhaps even more interesting, near the end of the interview a caller asks if Vance has read A Quest for Simbilis by Michael Shea (a sequel to one of Vance’s own books, it stars a Vance character). In response Vance says that he hadn’t read it but that he’d still given Shea the go-ahead to try to get it published when Shea had asked. Then he invites the caller to write his own sequel! Interesting eh?

Brain Plucker: OSC on NPR

Rick Jackson, an SFFaudio alumnus (and owner of Wonder Audio), has been minding a new blog called Brain Plucker. Here is his latest post in full:

Heard an interesting interview with Orson Scott Card today on NPR’s Talk of the Nation. He talks about the Ender Series. I have to admit I was all onboard with the initial series but lost interest after the parallel Ender’s Shadow series. I liked the original series because each book was unique. Ender’s Shadow wasn’t a bad book by any means. OSC also talks about the comic book adaptation which sounds very interesting. I’m going to take a look at it. But then again after reading the books, my time is probable better spent on something unique to me. He also talks about the Hollywood adaptation of Ender’s Game.
