CBC + RR.cc: Rex Stout’s Nero Wolfe EXCELLENT RADIO DRAMA from 1982

In 1982 the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation aired a fantastic 13-episode radio series:

Rex Stout’s Nero Wolfe

It stared Mavor Moore (as Nero Wolfe), Don Francks (as Archie Goodwin), Cec Linder (as Inspector Cramer), Frank Perry (as Fritz), and Alfie Scott (as Saul Panzer).

“It took [Toronto actor and producer] Ron Hartmann two years to adapt, direct and produce the 13 episodes for radio,” reported the Globe and Mail. “Ron and I are ardent Nero Wolfe fans, and we’re out to convert the listener,” Moore said.

The series was released on cassette by Durkin Hayes Audio (aka DH Audio) in the late 1990s. But DH is out of business, the cassettes out of print, and the CBC hasn’t licensed any replacements.

What’s a serious Wolfe fan to do?

Well, he can do do a search on RadioArchive.cc! It’s the premier place to find publicly funded programming, and it just now happens to have a new collection of old-off air recordings!

Archive.org: CBC Radio Vancouver – The Kraken Wakes based on the novel by John Wyndham

Someone has posted a 1965 CBC Radio dramatization of the “apocalyptic science fiction novel” by John Wyndham’s novel The Kraken Wakes to Archive.org. Unlike a lot of OTR (old time radio) this is very likely not in the public domain (as claimed on the site), but does qualify as the audio drama equivalent of abandonware (as CBC never rebroadcast it or made it commercially available) – either way if you’re going to hear it it’d be wise to be quick about it.

ABC Radio National: Wake In Fright by Kenneth Cook

So Canada’s public radio book reading program Between The Covers is podcast. One whole channel (BBC Radio 4) for the U.K. is available through Radio Downloader subscription. So what about our friends in Australia? Are they making their shows available?

Yes, they sure aren’t!

ABC Radio National is still in bad shape podcasting wise. They’ve got their terrific non-fiction programs like The Philosopher’s Zone and All In The Mind pleasing everyone all over the world but their book reading program, called Book Reading, isn’t available except via 20th century tech called “streaming audio” (RealAudio or Windows Media). This is really bad.

I’ve said it before, and before and before and before, and most assuredly before – when oh when will ABC Radio National join the 21st century?

I bring this up because they’ve got a terrific sounding novel being broadcast right now:

Wake In Fright is an open-eyed nightmare played out under a scorching outback sun. On one level it’s a great, mad, hallucinatory yarn about landing yourself in the ultimate geographical cul-de-sac – a place without exit. But underneath its compulsively readable surface lurks another, even darker story; a sort of ‘bush existentialist’ tale about the nature of self-entrapment, and the way in which we are often the architects of our own worst dreams.

Wake In Fright

CBC: Rollback by Robert J. Sawyer COMPLETED

Canada’s book reading radio show, Between The Covers, has just finished adding all 25 parts of Robert J. Sawyer‘s novel Rollback to its podcast.

For my own listening pleasure I’ve gone through and stripped out all the intros and extros so as to make it into one big clean audiobook file.

You can, and probably should, do the same to your own files if you’re planning to listen to this audiobook straight through. Here’s my suggestion:

Downloading the files from the feed (or HERE), dragging them into Audacity (a free digital audio editor) one at a time and snip-off the first and last 30 seconds (or so from) from each file. Then plop the resulting (shortened) MP3 files into another piece of software called MP3 to iPod Audiobook Converter. Export as one big M4B and drag into itunes under as a single new playlist. The above may seem slightly complicated (at least the first time around) but it’s not really that tough and it will improve your enjoyment of the audiobook.

Alternatively, I think Julie from Forgotten Classics has figured out a similar (or reverse) system using iTunes 9. That might work. But myself I like the idea that I can drag a single DRM-free file into Skype and send it out immediately to a friend (who uses iTunes) and have it show up in the right category, ready for bookmarked listening.

So, get downloading from the feed people! And hurry it up, because those files will only be there for a limited time – and that’s your only option at this point, at least until some thoughtful person (cleverer than me in the ways of torrent assemblage) puts a tracker for the novel up on RadioArchive.cc website. CBC should really be doing it actually, but that’s probably expecting a little to much at this point.

Canadia: 2056 in the music section of the iTunes store

As our twitter subscribers already know the first 5 episodes of Canadia: 2056, the CBC’s last great Science Fiction (and comedy) series |READ OUR REVIEW|, are now available in the “spoken word” section of the iTunes store.

Spoken word is, of course, not the right category for Canadia: 2056. In fact it’s a terrible section for this great series. It is low traffic section and it has had titles removed from it (when Audible.com has complained to Apple about titles in it violating their contractual monopoly on audiobook and audio drama content). Even worse these tracks will not have bookmarking features as found on audibooks in the audiboook section. Despite all these problems and the general caveats associated with downloading from the music store of iTunes (vs. the relative safety of Audible.com) you may want to snap these first 5 tracks up. Presumably if these first five tracks sell well CBC will put up the rest of season 1 and maybe even season 2!

Or you could just get the ~~DRM free versions~~ on CD through the CBC store HERE. It is more expensive that way, but it is 100% complete and it won’t disappear if you have a hard drive crash.

Update:
Matt Watts, the writer and star of Canadia 2056 points out that the files on iTunes are in fact DRM free! And that it’s just $4.99 for 5 episodes. That’s pretty damn good for DRM free!
