CBC NXNW: Studio One Book Club interview with Guy Gavriel Kay

SFFaudio Online Audio

CBC North By NorthwestI tell people I don’t listen to the radio much anymore, but that’s not quite true. Every single morning I wake up to the sound of CBC Radio One on my clock radio. And on Saturday and Sunday mornings this means I wake up to the sounds of North By Northwest, a BC based radio show that’s seemingly more often than not, about books. “The Studio One Book Club” is their long running feature I enjoy most. I was just checking their podcast feed and I re-discovered an interview I heard on the radio. Host Sheryl MacKay and a studio audience talked to Guy Gavriel Kay about his new historically inspired Fantasy novel Under Heaven. It was broadcast earlier this year in four parts. Coolly, all four parts are now available as a one hour, one episode, podcast! Have a listen |MP3|

CBC Spark: The future of public library design

SFFaudio Online Audio

CBC Radio - SparkThe latest Spark podcast has a fascinating segment called “The future of public library design” in which host Nora Young talks to a Dutch librarian, and a designer, about their bold experiment in library design. The new Almere public library looks like a bookstore, features a big video gaming section, and uses a “shop concept” to make the various groups of patrons much more likely to stick around.

There’s a great idea, check it out … play X-Box and PC games, in the library!

CBC Spark: Bill C-32, Canada’s awful new copyright legistlation

SFFaudio Online Audio

CBC Radio - SparkCanada’s Conservative government has tabled a new copyright bill (a proposed law). Bill C-32 contains a provision to prevent the legalization of most of the rights it purports to be enshrining. The DRM (Digital Rights Management) protection provisions in Bill C-32 would trump Canadian citizen’s rights on a number of fronts.

Listen to Nora Young of CBC’s Spark talking to CBC’s Peter Nowak about Bill C-32 |MP3|.

After listening to the segment it sounds to my like Bill C-32 is a hipper, slicker version of Bill C-61. The question is will better talking points be enough for it to get through? I sure hope not. Bill C-32 means…

-We’ll have to say goodbye to fair dealing (using portions of copyrighted material in your own work). Circumventing what the government is calling “TPMs” (technological protection measures) on copyrighted materials would not be unlawful under Bill C-32. TPM, by the way, is the new, less tarred acronym for DRM.

This is really bad folks. The most read story I’ve ever written includes a Wall-E with a “copyright criminal” sign. I photoshopped from two different copyrighted images. That’s fair dealing, right there. That image has been widely used around the net (do a search for it on TinEye.com if you’re curious).

-Goodbye format shifting! No more ripping a DVD to MP4 for your iPod. It would be legal under Bill C-32 only if your DVD didn’t have any DRM. I guess it’s just too bad that virtually every store bought DVD you’ve ever purchased has DRM on it!

Under Bill C-32 you won’t be allowed to rip your own legally owned DVDs. You’ll just have to keep buying the same movie over and over folks.

-Lawyer up if you’ve ever installed a PC game! DRM can lock out a game’s owner from their own legally purchased products.

I recently bought the Medal of Honor 10th Anniversary Bundle (at Future Shop), I played through the first two games in the series only to discover the fourth (Medal of Honor: Airborne) had a bad install on my Vista machine. I entered the activation code three times, and was locked out. I had to download a keygen to make my own game work.

CBC begins podcasting RADIO DRAMA: Backbencher

SFFaudio Online Audio

So I turned on CBC Radio late one evening last Thursday and discovered a new radio drama! Backbencher airs twice on Thursdays, once at 11:30 am and once at 11:05 pm.

Oh well. I figured it was just another radio drama that I’d almost never be able to catch. But, I’m very pleased to say that my assumption was absolutely and completely WRONG WRONG WRONG. The great news, the fantabulous news, is that Backbencher, a CBC Radio One radio drama, is actually being OFFICIALLY PODCAST!

Four episodes are out already, and I declare Backbencher very good. I’m afraid that Backbencher has absolutely no SFF or Aural Noir content at all, but there are a few actors you may recognize like Nigel Bennett. The show is richly produced in Halifax, Nova Scotia and features a number of CBC radio drama veterans (from shows like Vanishing Point and Clean Sweep).

It’s great to know that CBC Radio is living up to it’s mandate, specifically the requirement that CBC programs “be made available throughout Canada by the most appropriate and efficient means.” Podcasting is that.

Score one for the Mother Corp and score one for Canadians in the copyfight.

CBC Radio One - BackbencherBackbencher
By Wendy Lill; Performed by a full cast
Podcast – Approx. 28 Minutes [RADIO DRAMA]
Podcaster: CBC Radio One
Podcast: April 8, 2010 – May 27, 2010
In Backbencher, we follow the story of Nellie Gordon, a paramedic from East Nova in Nova Scotia who decides to run for MP on a whim and, much to everyone’s surprise, gets elected. We go into caucus meetings, the hallways of Parliament and the House of Commons itself and experience it all from Nellie’s perspective each and every episode.

Episode 01 |MP3| The Nose Ring
After bragging about being The Voice of the People in her Maiden speech, Nellie’s first vote in the House of Commons is against a bill that could bring jobs to the people in her community of East Nova. Nellie’s first of many hurdles in Ottawa.

Episode 02 |MP3| What Goes Around
Nellie is swamped by applications for her riding office job in East Nova. Everyone is trying to sway her but she has to adhere to process and nepotism and patronage are not on the table. Or are they?

Episode 03 |MP3| Second Chance
MP Nellie Gordon struggles with two conflicting goods- protecting victims’ rights versus giving people a ‘second chance’. A government bill calling for longer sentences and no early release for violent offenders comes up in the House of Commons. Nellie clashes with her seat mate Herb Proctor and finds herself struggling with where she stands, even within her own party.

Episode 04 |MP3| Cutting Loose
MP Nellie Gordon finds herself on the wrong side of her party again when she supports a Liberal Private Members motion to cap MP salaries. Despite her best intentions to stay out of the media, she’s caught saying way too much and the Leader Charlie Dunn is not amused.

Cast:
Joanne Miller is Nellie Gordon

Lee J. Campbell is Herb Proctor
Jacob Robertson is Ben Gordon
Christopher Shore is Lars Edmunds

CBC Radio’s The Mystery Project: Midnight Cab by James W. Nichol

Aural Noir: Online Audio

Midnight Cab

The 1990s was full of mystery in Canada. Weekday broadcasts on CBC Radio featured more than a dozen detectives in fully dramatized mysteries. This was a result of The Mystery Project. Perhaps the most listened to series under this banner was Midnight Cab, a half-hour mystery show about a 19 year old Toronto cab driver named Walker Devereaux. Here’s what Thrilling Detective has to say about Midnight Cab:

One of the best series airing as part of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s The Mystery Project is Midnight Cab, which was aired in three runs of 13 episodes, 9 episodes, and 13 episodes (making a total of 35 episodes for the series).

The show starred David Ferry as WALKER DEVEREAUX, a young man, rather gullible and naive, from Bear River (north of Lake Superior) who comes to Toronto in order to become an author and winds up driving a cab on the midnight shift. From the start, he keeps running into problems (such as that body that someone left in the trunk of his cab), and he solves the mysteries with the help of his girlfriend, wheelchair-bound Krista Papadopoulos (who dispatches cabs), Alfonso Piatelli (his boss), and Metro Police Inspector Wilfred Kiss (a friendly homicide cop). Each episode is fairly self-contained, but the series builds on its past episodes as well, so we see Walker’s developing relationship with Krista, his coming to terms with the big city, etc.

Here’s the entire run…
