ABC RN Book Show talks to Michael Chabon

ABC Radio NationalABC Radio National’s The Book Show had a fun interview with Michael Chabon back in early December, it’s no longer listed on the ABC site but the 38 minute file is still on the server. Host Ramona Koval talked with Chabon about his Mythopoeic Award winning novel Summerland, his new book, Gentlemen Of The Road – The Tale Of Adventure, his older “adult” novel The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay and they even talk about his alternate history mystery The Yiddish Policeman’s Union. ABC RN again disapoints for Christmas

ABC RADIO NATIONALABC Radio National, Australia’s public radio broadcaster, is airing a reading of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. Like the ABC:RN reading of Dracula from earlier this year, this reading of A Christmas Carol is neither podcast nor available in another online audio format. The problem here is that ABC:RN’s Book Reading show remains committed to make listening next to impossible for Australians not glued to their radios. The official explanation is simple:

“Due to copyright restrictions this reading is unavailable as audio on demand.”

That’s terrible. A Christmas Carol is one of the most recorded audiobooks of all time. Sure their version is covered by copyright. But when will the honchos at ABC:RN get hip? BBC Radio 4 and BBC Radio 7, while not podcasting, at least make sure to get clearances to make their productions available for online listening. CBC Radio One podcasts its book reading program Between The Covers (as well as nearly every other program) and has started using creative commons music too (on the CBC Radio One program called Spark).

Born Mary Wilson in Ireland, Mary Fortune traveled with her father first to Canada and then to the Australian gold fields in 1855. She lived a colourful and precarious life in colonial Australia, a life reflected in her choice of pseudonym “Waif Wanderer”. Fortune made a living as a poet, wrote articles and stories and has become known as the earliest Australian crime writer. The Illumined Grave appears to be one of her ghost stories.

ABC RN to air Who Wrote Frankenstein?

ABC Radio NationalABC Radio National’s The Book Show has a timely documentary in their schedule for next Friday! It’s called Who Wrote Frankenstein? and here’s the description:

Was Mary Shelley too young and uneducated to have written Frankenstein? There is a debate raging about the author attribution of this classic and John Lauritsen says it was actually Percy Shelley. But, Germaine Greer says it’s precisely because it’s badly written that there should be no question of Mary Shelley being the author. Who’s right and how do they know?
