POUL ANDERSON

Poul AndersonPOUL ANDERSON (1926 – 2001) was an American Science Fiction and Fantasy author. He was a President of the SFWA, garnered 3 Nebula and 7 Hugo awards. More than 100 novels and short story collections were released during his lifetime. In a 1997 interview, he said the works that he would like to be remembered for were: Tau Zero, Midsummer Tempest, The Boat of a Million Years, Three Hearts and Three Lions, The Enemy Stars and Brain Wave. Many of his stories are Hard SF. “The Best Of Poul Anderson”, a Pocket Books collection of Anderson’s best stories (with an introduction by Barry Malzberg) describes Anderson as “the greatest science fiction adventurer.” Roger Elwood, editor of The Many Worlds Of Poul Anderson (AKA The Book Of Poul Anderson) described Anderson as “one of the abiding geniuses of the science fiction genre” – and claimed that he has “never written a bad story.” An Anderson story, no matter the length, will often deal with “epic” themes – whether it be the discovery of North America by the Chinese, time travel or the ongoing workings of an inter-stellar intelligence agency. Anderson was also deeply interested in history, writing novels like The High Crusade (an alien invasion story set in the Middle Ages), and War Of The Gods (a historical fiction novel about Vikings). He also penned some yarns based on Robert E. Howard’s Conan character as well as spoofing the character in one short story.

“Of the many science fiction stories that various authors have written over the years, I think Kyrie is one of the very best. It is pure science fiction, which is to say it is a story where the science is mandatory not optional. Take the science away and you have no story. In a world where writers and film makers complain that they have to play fast and loose with the science to tell an interesting or exciting story, Kyrie stands as a testament that that just isn’t true. But to tell a story like Kyrie takes talent and hard work. And perhaps that is why stories such as this are so rare.” – Warren James

Fantasy The Best of 2001 The Best of 2001 Fantasy
Edited by Karen Haber and Robert Silverberg; Read by Harlan Ellison and Ursula K. Le Guin
6 Cassettes – Approx. 9 Hours [UNABRIDGED]
Publisher: Audio Literature (Fantastic Audio)
Published: Spring 2002
ISBN: 1574535013
This release features edgy new stories by hot new talents, and old favorites from Poul Anderson and Ursula K. Le Guin. Silverberg and Haber say it best: “The present anthology is intended to show reach and range as it is demonstrated nowadays in the shorter forms of fiction.” You will find very little that is formulaic here, although we have not ignored any of fantasy’s great traditions. There are stories set in the familiar quasi-medieval worlds to which modern readers are accustomed, and others rooted in the authentic myth-constructs of high antiquity, and several that depend for their power on the juxtaposition of fantastic situations and terribly contemporary aspects of modern life on Earth. There are philosophical and theological speculations. There is even one science-fiction story — although one that carries scientific thinking to a fantastic extreme — by way of showing that science-fiction, rather than being a genre apart, is simply one of the many branches of fantasy literature. These stories — which we think are the best short fantasies published in 2001 — are reassuring proof of fantasy’s eternal power even in this technological age.
