ROBERT E. HOWARD

Robert E. HowardROBERT E. HOWARD (1906 -1936) was a Texan author of Fantasy, Adventure, Horror, Science Fiction, Mystery and Detective Fiction. He is best known for the creation of Conan. Most of his stories tended towards Fantasy, Adventure or Horror, with recurrent themes like reincarnation, boxing, self-reliance, racial memory and racial pseudo-science. He was a student of history, with some of his short stories depicting events from history (but usually made fantastic). Even when his fiction was not meant to be historical it often used historical place names and historical character names to dress his fictional worlds. His many writings, written during his too short career, are today mostly in the public domain. This has meant, since they’ve mostly gone PD, a delightful flourishing of audiobook and audio drama releases. Listed below are all the R.E.H. audiobooks, podcasts, and audio dramas that we are aware of.

Breckinridge Elkins is the roughest, toughest, fastest-shootin’, hardest-fightin’ feller in the Bear Creek settlement, and probably in the entire Humbolt Mountains. As he travels further from home, he single-handedly takes on outlaws, settles (and starts) feuds and tries his hand at romancing the girls. He also discovers a lot of strange customs among other folks, such as building houses out of boards and wearing clothes that ain’t buckskins. Set in Nevada during the late 1800’s, this collection of stories is a great rollicking romp through the American frontier as seen through the eyes of one of the most enjoyable characters created in the history of tall tales.

FREDERIK POHL

Frederik Pohl - original image by AllyUnionFREDERIK POHL (1919 – ) is an American Science Fiction author, author’s agent, magazine/book editor and SF fan, with a professional career in SF spanning more than sixty years. Pohl edited SF magazines for nearly two decades, off and on, and worked as a literary agent for a decade or so, but he primarily known as a Science Fiction author. For his writing he was named a SFWA Grand Master in 1993. A frequent collaborator with Cyril M. Kornbluth, and other, together they co-authored many fine novels and short stories. Pohl’s writings are often identifiable by distinctive themes and settings. Themes like psychiatry, sexuality, satire, and advertising appear in his fiction often, along with many other unique ideas. His prodigious intellect and scholarship, ever present in his stories, also made him, for a time, the official authority to the Encyclopædia Britannica on the subject of the Roman Emperor Tiberius. Too little of his prodigious output is available in the audio format, that is to say there is only a very small amount. Here’s all that we know of…

Roger Torraway watched in horror as the monster lurched, toppled over and died. Project Man Plus had gone suddenly and drastically wrong. The race to colonize Mars was too important, too costly, and America was already too committed, for plans to be scrapped. They would have to make a new Martian. And Roger Torraway was it, candidate for the endless surgery, operation after painful operation, that would enable him to survive on that faraway planet. Man Plus is a thrilling race against time – to land on Mars on schedule, to insure that Roger’s system will withstand the stress that killed the previous candidate. And meanwhile, somewhere, somehow, there has been a breakdown in the computer network…. With the edge-of-the-chair excitement and suspense, four-time Hugo Award winner Frederik Pohl tells the story of the remaking of man into Man Plus, creating in Roger an unforgettable character, grotesque in appearance but totally human in feeling – capable of yearning, depression, love, jealousy, terror. Includes an introduction by Robert J. Sawyer.

The Last Theorem by Arthur C. Clarke and Frederick PohlThe Last Theorem
By Arthur C. Clarke and Frederik Pohl; Read by Mark Bramhall
10 CDs – Approx. 11 Hours [UNABRIDGED]
Publisher: Books ?On Tape
Published: 2008
Two of science fiction’s most renowned writers join forces for a storytelling sensation. The historic collaboration between Frederik Pohl and his fellow founding father of the genre, Arthur C. Clarke, is both a momentous literary event and a fittingly grand farewell from the late, great visionary author of 2001: A Space Odyssey. The Last Theorem is a story of one man’s mathematical obsession, and a celebration of the human spirit and the scientific method. It is also a gripping intellectual thriller in which humanity, facing extermination from all-but-omnipotent aliens, the Grand Galactics, must overcome differences of politics and religion and come together … or perish. In 1637, the French mathematician Pierre de Fermat scrawled a note in the margin of a book about an enigmatic theorem: “I have discovered a truly marvelous proof of this proposition which this margin is too narrow to contain.” He also neglected to record his proof elsewhere. Thus began a search for the Holy Grail of mathematics–a search that didn’t end until 1994, when Andrew Wiles published a 150-page proof. But the proof was burdensome, overlong, and utilized mathematical techniques undreamed of in Fermat’s time, and so it left many critics unsatisfied–including young Ranjit Subramanian, a Sri Lankan with a special gift for mathematics and a passion for the famous “Last Theorem.” When Ranjit writes a three-page proof of the theorem that relies exclusively on knowledge available to Fermat, his achievement is hailed as a work of genius, bringing him fame and fortune. But it also brings him to the attention of the National Security Agency and a shadowy United Nations outfit called Pax per Fidem, or Peace Through Transparency, whose secretive workings belie its name. Suddenly Ranjit–together with his wife, Myra de Soyza, an expert in artificial intelligence, and their burgeoning family–finds himself swept up in world-shaking events, his genius for abstract mathematical thought put to uses that are both concrete and potentially deadly. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to anyone on Earth, an alien fleet is approaching the planet at a significant percentage of the speed of light. Their mission: to exterminate the dangerous species of primates known as homo sapiens.

Just as medicine is not a science, but rather an art—a device, practised in a scientific manner, in its best manifestations—time-travel stories are not science fiction. Time-travel, however, has become acceptable to science fiction readers as a traditional device in stories than are otherwise admissible in the genre. Here, Frederik Pohl employs it to portray the amusingly catastrophic meeting of three societies. First published in Future Science Fiction No. 30 1956.

EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS

Edgar Rice BurroughsEdgar Rice Burroughs (1875 – 1950) began writing for pulp magazines in the 1910s. His first sold story, Under the Moons of Mars introduced the hero John Carter. Soon after his most famous character, Tarzan, was cutting a swath through the pulp magazine jungle. ERB’s influence is massive, from Mike Resnick to Robert A. Heinlein, few don’t acknowledge the influence of Burroughs’ work and characters. Further, S.M. Stirling’s recent “The Lords of Creation” series is directly inspired by Burroughs’ writings. In audio, there are many different versions of his now public domain novels. There is even a long-running podcast devoted to the man.

Easy, swank, pulp read about an omnipotent gentleman teleported to Mars, finding an outlandish society of ape-, tree- and lizardmen, red-, white-, yellowmen, brains on legs, strange bastions and curious apparatuses, where the strongest survives and women are needy beauties to be saved. “The Gods of Mars is a 1918 Edgar Rice Burroughs science fiction novel, the second of his famous Barsoom series. It can be said that the novel set the tone for much science fiction to come. Its influence can clearly be seen in franchises such as Star Trek and Farscape. While Burroughs no doubt borrowed liberally from the pulp fiction of his day, particularly westerns and swashbuckling tales, the pacing and themes set the tone for the soft science fiction genre. The protagonist, John Carter, with his proficiency in hand-to-hand combat and flirtations with beautiful alien women, could be said to have set the mold for later influential icons like Captain James T. Kirk and James Bond. At the end of the first book, A Princess of Mars, John Carter is unwillingly transported back to Earth. The Gods of Mars begins with his arrival back on Barsoom (Mars) after a ten year hiatus, separated from his wife Dejah Thoris, his unborn child, and the Red Martian people of the nation of Helium, whom he has adopted as his own. Unfortunately, John Carter materializes in the one place on Barsoom from which nobody is allowed to depart: the Valley Dor, which is the Barsoomian heaven.”

Thanks to his strength and combat abilities he rises in position in the tribe and earns the respect eventually the friendship of Tars Tarkas one of the Thark chiefs. The Tharks subsequently capture Dejah Thoris, Princess of Helium, a member of the humanoid red Martian race. The red Martians inhabit a loose network of city states and control the desert planet’s canals, along which its agriculture is concentrated. This is the third of Burrough’s Tarzan novels. Originally serialized in All-Story Cavalier magazine in 1914, the novel was first published in book form by A. C. McClurg in 1916. In the previous novel Tarzan reclaimed his name and title as John Clayton, Lord Greystoke. In this novel he finds that proper society is just as vicious as the jungle when greedy men threaten him and his new family. Jane and her infant son Jack are kidnapped by Tarzan’s enemies, Nikolas Rokoff and Alexis Paulvitch, who then trap Tarzan himself and attempt to exile him forever on a primitive island, bereft of all those dear to him. There, however, Tarzan gains new allies in the panther Sheeta and the ape Akut, together with Akut’s band. With their aid he tracks down his wife and son. . .and his arch enemies Rokoff and Paulvitch.

ROBERT A. HEINLEIN

Robert A. HeinleinROBERT A. HEINLEIN (1907 – 1988) was an American Science Fiction author. He won an unprecedented five Hugo awards for his many excellent novels and was named a Grand Master by the SFWA. Heinlein wrote short stories prior to WWII, entered the United States Navy and was discharged due to poor health. After WWII he began writing a series of popular novels affectionally known as “juveniles” – which tended to star young men or teens. Later, in the late 1950s and early 1960s he began a middle period, in which his protagonists confronted more societal based issues. In his lat career, the 1970s and 1980s he wrote novels about older, wiser, more opinionated men. But there were many exceptions. If you haven’t read Heinlein, you haven’t really read Science Fiction. The bulk of his impressive fiction is available as audiobooks, often in multiple versions.

SPIDER ROBINSON

Spider RobinsonSPIDER ROBINSON (1948 – ) is a Canadian/American Science Fiction author living in British Columbia, Canada. His Science Fiction is often loosely autobiographical, either having himself as a character, or some variant with similar habits and mannerisms. Before settling on Bowen Island in B.C., Robinson spent time in the back to the land movement. Themes of libertarianism and ecology often come up in his stories. He is also a frequent collaborator, and has co-authored several novels with his wife Jeanne Robinson as well as one with one of his favourite authors, Robert A. Heinlein. Indeed, a Spider Robinson novel often displays deep affection for the writings of other authors including those of Robert A. Heinlein, John D. MacDonald and Donald E. Westlake. Robinson has been honoured with both Hugo and Nebula awards for his fiction and is an active podcaster and audiobook narrator. His fiction has been wonderfully audiobooked by publisher Blackstone Audio.

“She sat zazen, concentrating on not concentrating, until it was time to prepare for the appointment. Sitting seemed to produce the usual serenity, put everything in perspective. Her hand did not tremble as she applied her make-up; tranquil features looked back at her from the mirror. She was mildly surprised, in fact, at just how calm she was, until she got out of the hotel elevator at the garage level and the mugger made his play. She killed him instead of disabling him. Which was obviously not a measured, balanced action–the official fuss and paperwork could make her late. Annoyed at herself, she stuffed the corpse under a shiny new Westinghouse roadable whose owner she knew to be in Luna, and continued on to her own car. This would have to be squared later, and it would cost. No help for it–she fought to regain at least the semblance of tranquillity as her car emerged from the garage and turned north. Nothing must interfere with this meeting, or with her role in it.”

By Spider & Jeanne Robinson: Read by Spider Robinson
7 CD, 8 hrs – [UNABRIDGED]

Shara Drummond was a gifted dancer and a brilliant choreographer, but she could not pursue her dream of dancing on Earth. So she went to space, creating a new art form in three dimensions. And when the aliens arrived, there was only one way to prove that the human race deserved not just to survive, but to reach the stars. The only hope was Shara, with her stardance. The Hugo and Nebula Award-winning Stardance series pioneered the concept of zero gravity dance, which even sparked the interest of NASA and shortlisted co-author Jeanne Robinson for a seat on a space shuttle to become the first actual free-fall dancer in space. Though the Challenger explosion canceled that dream, now Jeanne is being given a second chance to choreograph dance in space…on film. See Stardance Home Pagefor more.

This sequel to Stardance returns to the rarified world of Top Step, an asteroid in orbit above 21st-century Earth. There, for the price of all one’s worldly possessions, humans are able to live in a vacuum indefinitely by joining with a symbiotic lifeform that provides all needed nourishment. For Rain McLeod, a 46-year-old dancer whose failing body is about to end her career, the Starseed program is the only way to continue living her dream. But for others, including several religious groups and power hungry countries back on earth, the existence of Stardancers represents a threat to all humanity. When a missle attack threatens Top Step and Morgan’s lover, Robert, is implicated as a prime suspect, Rain must choose between her private dream and the greater good in a world poised on the verge of an evolutionary leap.

Science Fiction Audiobook - Variable Star by Robert Heinlein and Spider RobinsonVariable Star
By Robert Heinlein and Spider Robinson; Read by Spider Robinson
9 CD, 11 hrs – [UNABRIDGED]

At his death in 1988, Robert A. Heinlein left a legacy of novels and short stories that almost single-handedly defined modern science fiction. But one of Heinlein’s masterpieces was never finished. In 1955, he began work on Variable Star, a powerful and passionate tale of two young lovers driven apart by pride, power, and the vastness of interstellar time and space. Then he set it aside to focus on other novellas.

The detailed outline and notes he created for this project lay forgotten for decades, only to be rediscovered almost a half century later. Now the Heinlein estate has authorized award-winning author Spider Robinson to expand that outline into a full-length novel. The result is vintage Heinlein, faithful in style and spirit to the Grand Master’s original vision.

ROBERT R. McCAMMON

Robert R. McCammonRobert R. McCammon (1952 – ) is an American Horror novelist. A somewhat elusive figure, he is nevertheless one of the most admired living writers of Horror fiction. His output has diminished since he renounced deadlines and the pressures from publishers in 1999. But during his writing career McCammon wrote more than a dozen novels and about as many short stories. Not only an admired writer, he was also in great part responsible for the creation of the Horror Writer’s Association. There are just few commercially released audiobooks of his work available. For more information on McCammon, visit the official website.
