In less than twenty-four hours a vicious and virulent disease destroys virtually all of the population. Billions are killed. Thousands die every second. There are no symptoms and no warnings. Within moments of infection each victim suffers a violent and agonizing death. Only a handful of survivors remain. By the end of the first day those survivors wish they were dead. Then the disease strikes again, and all hell breaks loose…

DEAN KOONTZ

Dean Koontz Audiobooks

Dean KoontzDEAN KOONTZ (1945 -) is perhaps best known as an American author of thriller/suspense novels with fantastic elements. Koontz has in fact written straight Science Fiction, at least early in his career. Later writings often feature recurring fantastic themes (like talking dogs). Another recurring topic is that of sociopathy. He returns to again and again, making him unique in the field of fantastic fiction writing. Some readers say his writing falls into the “Horror” genre though Koontz flatly denies this. Labels aside, a few things are very clear; he’s very prolific, intensely popular and definitely, completely and utterly askew from the mainstream – despite being so popular in it. Koontz’s audiobooks tend to be hard to find after their initial release – if you think you might want one, snap it up while you can. If you can find an older audiobook it will tend to be expensive – collector’s don’t give them up easily.

In the stillness of a golden September afternoon, deep in the wilderness of the Rockies, a solitary craftsman, Grady Adams, and his magnificent Irish wolfhound, Merlin, step from shadow into light . . . and into an encounter with enchantment. That night, through the trees, under the moon, a pair of singular animals will watch Grady’s isolated home, waiting to make their approach. A few miles away, Camillia Rivers, a local veterinarian, begins to unravel the threads of a puzzle that will bring to her door all the forces of a government in peril. At a nearby farm, long-estranged identical twins come together to begin a descent into darkness. . . . In Las Vegas, a specialist in chaos theory probes the boundaries of the unknowable. . . . On a Seattle golf course, two men make matter-of-fact arrangements for murder. . . . Along a highway by the sea, a vagrant scarred by the past begins a trek toward his destiny. In a novel that is at once wholly of our time and timeless, fearless and funny, Dean Koontz takes listeners into the moment between one turn of the world and the next, across the border between knowing and mystery. It is a journey that will leave all who take it Breathless.

Bestselling novelist Cullen “Cubby” Greenwich is a lucky man and he knows it. He makes a handsome living doing what he enjoys. His wife, Penny, a children’s book author and illustrator, is the love of his life. Together they have a brilliant six-year-old, Milo, affectionately dubbed “Spooky,” and a non-collie named Lassie, who’s all but part of the family. So Cubby knows he shouldn’t let one bad review of his otherwise triumphant new book get to him — even if it does appear in the nation’s premier newspaper and is penned by the much-feared, seldom-seen critic Shearman Waxx. Cubby knows that the best thing to do is ignore the gratuitously vicious, insulting, and inaccurate comments. Penny knows it; even little Milo knows it. If Lassie could talk, she’d tell Cubby to ignore them, too. Ignore Shearman Waxx and his poison pen is just what Cubby intends to do.

Harrison, named a Grand Master by the SFWA in 2009, was the author of several stand-alone novels, multiple series, and many short stories. Satire and humor marks much of his work. There have been several commercial releases of Harry Harrison audiobooks in the last couple of years, notably the Stainless Steel Rat series and Make Room, Make Room. There are also a good number of Harry Harrison audiobooks derived from his public domain fictions. Here are two good HH resources: official HH website and an informative HH blog too.

It was the rich damp grass, slippery as soap, covering the path, that caused .Carter to keep slipping and falling, not the steepness of the hill. The front of his raincoat was wet and his knees were muddy long before be reached the summit. And with each step forward and upward the continuous roar of sound grew louder. He was hot and tired by the time he reached the top of the ridge–yet he instantly forgot his discomfort as he looked out across the wide bay.

Set in a future in which humanity’s dream of total equality is fully realized and poverty in terms of material wealth has been eliminated, humanity has straight-jacketed itself into the only social system which could make this possible. Class differentiation is entirely horizontal rather than vertical and no matter what one’s chosen field, all advancement is based solely on seniority rather than ability. What is an intelligent and ambitious man to do when enslaved by a culture that forbids him from utilizing his God-given talents? If he’s a military officer in time of war, he might just decide to switch sides. If said officer is a true believer in the principles that enslave him and every bit as loyal as he is ambitious, that’s tantamount to breaking a universal law of physics, but Colonel Sebastian MacMaine has what it takes to meet the challenge.
