ROBERT BLOCH

Robert BlochROBERT BLOCH (1917 – 1994) An American writer, primarily of Crime, Horror and Science Fiction. Bloch wrote hundreds of short stories and more than a score of novels in several genres. His best know story is Psycho, upon which the Alfred Hitchcock film of the same name was based. Bloch was a student of H.P. LOVECRAFT, who acted as his literary mentor. Early Bloch stories sold to pulp magazines like Weird Tales. He was also a prolific screenwriter. Bloch was a recipient of the Hugo Award, Bram Stoker Award, and World Fantasy Awards.
Robert Bloch was involved in television, film and radio. The latter saw his stories adapted as radiod drama. In fact Bloch co-created and wrote scripts for a 1945 syndicated radio program entitled Stay Tuned for Terror. Many of the 15 minute programs were adaptations of his own pulp stories. Unfortunately, none of the thirty nine episodes of this 1945 series are extant.

Sound so visual you’re literally engulfed by its bonechilling terror! Stephen King’s sinister imagination and the miracle of 3-D sound transport you to a sleepy all-American town. It’s a hot, lazy day, perfect for a cookout, until you see those strange dark clouds. Suddenly a violent storm sweeps across the lake and ends as abruptly and unexpectedly as it had begun. Then comes the mist…creeping slowly, inexorably into town, where it settles and waits, trapping you in the supermarket with dozens of others, cut off from your families and the world. The mist is alive, seething with unearthly sounds and movements. What unleashed this terror? Was it the Arrowhead Project—the top secret government operation that everyone has noticed but no one quite understands? And what happens when the provisions have run out and you’re forced to make your escape, edging blindly through the dim light? The Mist has you in it grip, and this masterpiece of 3-D sound engineering surrounds you with horror so real that you’ll be grabbing your own arm for reassurance. To one side—and whipping around your chair, a slither of tentacles. Swooping down upon you, a rush grotesque, prehistoric wings. In the impenetrable mist, hearing is seeing—and believing. And what you’re about to hear, you’ll never forget. Recorded using “Kunstkopf Binaural Sound” technology.

MURRAY LEINSTER

Murray LeinsterMURRAY LEINSTER (1896 – 1975) was the nom de plume of William Fitzgerald Jenkins, an American Science Fiction and Mystery writer and inventor. He had an extensive career that spanned writing and inventing for film, radio, television and print. Leinster’s first SF story was The Runaway Skyscraper which appeared in the February 22, 1919 issue of Argosy. Leinster is credited with the invention of ‘parallel universe’ stories. His classic story about parallel universes, Sidewise in Time, was first published in the June 1934 issue of Astounding. Another Leinster classic, his 1945 novella First Contact, plowed new ground with the subgenre of “first contact” stories and also posited the handy SF device called the ‘universal translator.’ His 1946 story, A Logic Named Joe not only describes a personal computer, but also a primitive internet. He won a Hugo Award for his 1956 story Exploration Team. Leinster was also the inventor of the video special effects process known as front projection.

Joe Kenmore heard the airlock close with a sickening wheeze and then a clank. In desperation he turned toward Haney. “My God, we’ve been locked out!” Through the transparent domes of their space helmets, Joe could see a look of horror and disbelief pass across Haney’s face. But it was true! Joe and his crew were locked out of the Space Platform. Four thousand miles below circled the Earth. Under Joe’s feet rested the solid steel hull of his home in outer space. But without tools there was no hope of getting back inside. Joe looked at his oxygen meter. It registered thirty minutes to live.
