H.G. WELLS

H. G. WellsH.G. WELLS (1866 – 1946) An English Science Fiction author, his influence is still strongly felt to this day. Often considered “The Father of Science Fiction,” Wells invented many of the themes still active in Science Fiction today. Alien invasion and time-travel are what he is best remembered for, but many other minor and major themes of SF were pioneered by him. Most of his fiction is now in the public domain in most countries of the world – which means there are many FREE audiobooks of his short stories and novels available online. Even so, many commercial releases are also available, as well as audio drama adaptations of his works.

Podcast: April 19th 2007
Here is a classic treat for listeners who enjoy the classic Science Fiction of the masters. In this podcast only version of Beam Me Up – we have on tap, The Crystal Egg written by Herbert George Wells. The story tells of a shop owner, named Mr. Cave, who finds a strange crystal egg that serves as a window into the planet Mars. The story was written the same year in which Wells was serializing The War of the Worlds in Pearson’s Magazine, a year before it was published as a novel. Because of the vaguely similar descriptions of the Martians and their machines, “The Crystal Egg” is often considered a prequel to The War of the Worlds, though there is no clear foreshadowing of the events that transpire in the novel.

Two stuffy English scientists, always looking to further their scientific knowledge, create a substance called Herakleophorbia, which in its fourth incarnation – known as Herakleophorbia IV – has the special ability of making things increase greatly in size. As the scientists begin experimentation on some chicks, the substance is misused by some “country folk” who don’t take it seriously and soon Herakleophorbia IV is running rampant throughout England and then across the globe, creating giant plants and animals that wreak havoc on the land and then the people. Then the first giant babies are revealed and for the first time humanity has to contend with the existence of a new race of giant people. How humanity deals with this shocking new creation is revealed in The Food of the Gods and How it Came to Earth.

Abigail Irene Garrett drinks too much. She makes scandalous liaisons with inappropriate men, and if in her youth she was a famous beauty, now she is both formidable–and notorious. She is a forensic sorceress, and a dedicated officer of a Crown that does not deserve her loyalty. She has nothing, but obligations. Sebastien de Ulloa is the oldest creature she has ever known. He was no longer young at the Christian millennium, and that was nine hundred years ago. He has forgotten his birth-name, his birth-place, and even the year in which he was born, if he ever knew it. But he still remembers the woman who made him immortal. He has everything, but a reason to live. In a world where the sun never set on the British Empire, where Holland finally ceded New Amsterdam to the English only during the Napoleonic wars, and where the expansion of the American colonies was halted by the war magic of the Iroquois, they are exiles in the new world–and its only hope for justice. Wax is the second standalone tale in Bear’s new mosaic novel New Amsterdam.

MIKE RESNICK

Mike ResnickMike Resnick (1942 – ) is a prolific American Science Fiction and Fantasy writer (and editor). His stories are often inspired by his wife, Carol. In the 1960s and 1970s, like many of his peers, Resnick wrote sleeze novels under pseudonyms. His visits to Kenya inspired the hallowed Kirinyaga stories, and indeed, fable and legend, references to historical writers and events all wynd their way through his impressive body of work. Humor, sentiment and emotion are also central elements of a typical Resnick story. Many Resnick short stories feature robots and religion. He is a frequent and welcome visitor to conventions.

Fantasy audiobook - short story - A Study In Scarlet by Neil GaimanA Study in Emerald
By Neil Gaiman; Read by Neil Gaiman
1 |MP3| – Approx. 49 Minutes [UNABRIDGED]
Publisher: Harper Audio
Published: November 2007
Alluding to both the Sherlock Holmes canon and the Old Ones of the Cthulhu Mythos, this Hugo Award winning short story will delight fans of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, H.P. Lovecraft, and of course, Neil Gaiman. A Study in Emerald draws listeners in through carefully revealed details as a consulting detective and his narrator friend solve the mystery of a murdered German noble. But with its subtle allusions and surprise ending, this mystery hints that the real fun in solving this case lies in imagining all the details that Gaiman doesn’t reveal, and challenges listeners to be detectives themselves.

According to The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch – the world’s only totally reliable guide to the future – the world will end on a Saturday. Next Saturday, in fact. Just after tea . . . The armies of Good and Evil are amassing, the Four Bikers of the apocalypse are revving up, and everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan. Except that a somewhat fussy angel and a fast-living demon are not particularly looking forward to the coming rapture – having thoroughly enjoyed life on earth amongst the mortals. If Crowley and Aziraphale are going to stop it from happening, they’ve got to find and kill the Antichrist. There’s just one glitch: someone seems to have misplaced him…

God is dead. Meet the kids. When Fat Charlie’s dad named something, it stuck.
