Tough Sh*t: Life Advice from a Fat, Lazy Slob Who Did Good came to us a while back, maybe shortly after Kevin Smith’s TV “reality” show Comic Book Men began airing. I liked Kevin Smith’s movies, but I didn’t like the show. It was supposed to be unscripted but was obviously and boringly scripted.

So anyway, I figure after seeing that I must have plopped the audiobook into the bottom of a box and forgot about it or something.

But then, just recently, I was thinking about one of his terrific podcasts appearances (on a 2009 /Filmcast review of the Watchmen movie |MP3| that really is excellent) and that got me thinking about how good Smith can be when he’s good and so I went and found the audiobook, and so, now, here it is.

I’ve been listening to the novel, and find it to be punky, flowery and straightforward. The writing itself seems breezy, without pretense or subterfuge. The first few minutes of the audiobook introduces some very steampunkily named characters (“Mr. Syntax” and “Mr. Lightbridge”) – both voiced by the narrator Chris Barnes. Barnes seems to have a natural Scottish accent but as the characters are English and American he creditably voices them as such.

Writing this now, as I approach the first hour mark of the audiobook, I find The Cold Beneath to be a wholly improbable bit of fun, a brummagem amalgam of ahistorical realities, a sepia toned breccia of impossible ideas held in their interstices by a sticky cement of amiable frivolousness.

In other words, The Cold Beneath promises to be nothing more than a distracting steampuk adventure, set aboard an airship, with one of the characters sporting clockwork robotic legs, and, by looking at the cover, perhaps later, some scary frozen zombies.

Recent Arrivals: AudioGo: H.P. Lovecraft’s Book Of The Supernatural edited by Stephen Jones

Recently arrived, and currently being soaked in through my skin and ears, is this giant collection of weird fiction. Assembled from a list of stories found in H.P. Lovecraft’s essay Supernatural Horror In Literature, it is a collection of well known and obscure classics by authors that H.P. Lovecraft loved.

Looking at the table of contents I noted that I’d already read several of the stories in this collection – including The Turn Of The Screw (we did a podcast about that one), the engimatic Christmas horror Markheim, the scientific ghost tale What Was It?, the unutterably creepy and horrific The Voice In The Night very recently, and many years ago, perhaps in high school, The Yellow Wallpaper. But even though I’ve read some of these stories already I’m still very excited. Each of the stories seems to be preceded by some relevant words by Lovecraft himself – and at the very least I will be listening to the mini-introductions to those stories I am well familiar with.

Until then I will content myself in listening to the unknown ones. For example, the frightful first person narrative of Who Knows? by Guy de Maupassant is thrilling and wondering me in the exact same way The Horla almost exactly one year ago. It’s wonderful!

Recent Arrival – Cast Grabber [PODCAST SUBSCRIBING HARDWARE]

Cast Grabber

Every once in a while I see a piece of hardware advertized as suitable for use with podcasts. Usually it’s just a microphone. But this is the only piece of computer hardware I’ve ever seen that was specifically made for podcasts!

I bought the Cast Grabber for $10 from Princess Auto in Coquitlam, in a section dealing with aging and near obsolete hardware. It looks like it came out in 2006 or 2007, and so unfortunately it doesn’t seem to work with the iPhone, the iTouch, or the iPad.

I’ll try to find an old regular iPod to see if it’ll work.
