Maria Lectrix Podcast: The Moon Pool by A. Merritt

Maureen O’Brien, of the Maria Lectrix podcast, may be the hardest working narrator in podcasting, she has started recording yet another novel, The Moon Pool by Abraham Merritt. Maureen sez of it:

“Fantasy and horror in the South Seas! This 1919 classic influenced many writers and filmmakers, including the creators of the TV show Lost and the roleplaying game Dungeons & Dragons. Abraham Merritt was a journalist, editor, and pulp writer. He died in 1943. His novels Burn, Witch, Burn! and Seven Footprints to Satan have been adapted into movies.”

This was A. Merritt’s first novel and it was written in two parts. The first was called “The Moon Pool” it appeared June 22, 1919 in the early pulp called All-Story Weekly. Merritt followed up the successful tale with a longer sequel, “The Conquest of the Moon Pool,” which appeared in six installments starting February 15, 1919. Later they were combined to form the novel below…

Originally broadcast on January 27, 2004 in the wake of Opportunity’s landing on the Red Planet, Cultural History of Mars is a 35-minute piece from National Public Radio’s program Talk of the Nation.

Hosted by Neal Conan, here’s a description of the piece: “Earthlings were fascinated by Mars long before sending rovers and landers to beam back three-dimensional color pictures of its surface. Does it have canals? Did little green men ever inhabit the planet? Will humans ever walk or live on Mars? NPR’s Neal Conan and guests discuss the history and mystery of Earth’s neighbor, from Galileo to War of the Worlds and beyond.”

Conan’s guests include Dr. William Sheehan, co-author of Mars: The Lure of the Red Planet (2001), David Catling, professor of astrobiology at University of Washington, and Mark Rahner, pop culture writer for The Seattle Times.

Covering both science and science fiction, the discussion mentions a Ray Bradbury episode from X-Minus One (radio drama, 1955), Percival Lowell, Mars Attacks! (film, 1996), H. G. Wells’ The War of the Worlds (1898), Arthur C. Clarke’s The Sands of Mars (1951), Kim Stanley Robinson, Bradbury’s The Martian Chronicles from Dimension X (radio adaptation, 1950/1951), Edgar Rice Burroughs’ character John Carter, C. S. Lewis, Robinson Crusoe on Mars (film, 1964), Angry Red Planet (film, 1960), Total Recall (film, 1990), and Rocketship X-M (film, 1950).

SkreemR.com: The Thing In The Moonlight and Dagon by H.P. Lovecraft

I’m always on the lookout for new online audio, now I’ve got a cool new search engine that isn’t google based. Check it out. SkreemR.com brought up 51 working files on my very first search (I searched for “lovecraft”). Of those 51 MP3s, many were links to SFFaudio or LibriVox, but I found a couple of new ones too…

First up, an unusual H.P. Lovecraft tale. According to Wikipedia….

“This story is based upon a letter Lovecraft wrote to his friend Donald Wandrei, dated November 24, 1927. In places, the letter and published story are identical, word-for-word. This letter describes a dream that Lovecraft had.” Apparently, the story was completed for publication by [J. Chapman] Miske, who filled in the story surrounding the description of the dream.”
