Yes, we do need Jack Vance audiobooks. It would be a good deal easier for the right narrator/voice actor to put you in the mood for Vance, and to put across the peculiar virtues of Vance, than to wait for people to learn to appreciate Vance on their own. Someone who is simultaneously rich in vocabulary and style and dry in tone… well, it’s difficult to work your way in. At least, it was for me.
Once I did appreciate Vance, of course I gobbled him up like candy. But it took me until my thirties, just as appreciating Dumas and Austen didn’t come until my late twenties.
It’s a great pity that Vincent Price is not with us. I think he would have been a great Vance reader, and have enjoyed it too. But instead, we have his work on Thirteen Ghosts of Scooby-Doo.
Actually, now that I think of it, I should write a drabble. Scooby Doo as written by Jack Vance. For once, it would come in handy to know Scooby’s full name. :)
